After the girls started scholl at Burnside Elementary in Victoria 1983, I became involved in the Block Parnet Program. I was not only the School Coordinator but the Secretary for Victoria Block Parent Program. I remained involved becoming the Victoria Area Coordinator, then the Regional Coordinator for the Lower Vancouver Island in 1987 on the Provincial Block Parent board. I retired from the Block Parent Program in 2001 when I was awarded the National Block Parent Program's Gold Pin (the highest recogniton service award). In the time-frame, I was asked twice to run for the National chair position but declined due to personal reason.
In 1998 my mother Mabel Sefton and I, helped form the Greater Victoria Lifetime Networks Society, with six other families. Lifetime Networks Victoria, as it is locally known, is an organization that help form support networks for the disabled, to carry on the work that the parnets have traditionally done, after the parents are no longer present or able to do so. I held the position of Treasurer from the start. In 2000, I started the newsletter for the Network to help promoted the organization. We have a small but very supportive group of network members, who help Don with his quality of life, physically, emotionally and socially.
In 1999/2000 I was the co-coordinator of HMCS Protecteur's Family Network, while they were suddenly deployed to East Timor in Sept. 1999. They returned in March, 2000. Because I insisted on closely liaisoning with the Admiral during this time by providing various information sessions to the family\partner members, Christmas Party, Operation Kiss(ofrming Care packages for the members of the ship to hand out to the children of East Timor), ets. As a result, the next ships that were deployed on long missions, were able to work more closely with the military by having a team that exchanged information.
Since then, the military has recognized the families more than before and the national policies have been changing a little faster than before. The coordinators before me, have tried to get a working relationship with the military but were having a very difficult time. My philosophy with the Admiral was to have the families be given enough information so they can carry on with their own life and feel safe and secure with those they love, but not to know everything that was going on especially concerning secure information.
On Nov. 29, 2002, I received the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal at the RCMP Island Division, Victoria, BC for the outstanding volunteer service to the community in the Block Parent Program. The medal is given to 46,000 across Canada in recognition of their volunteer service to their community.

He has assured me that the results were particularly gratifying from Middlesex East. Will you kindly accept and convey my personal thanks to all those who assisted in this very important work. The grade 7 class had made good progress in the sewing problems on which all pupils were working. The machine sewing was exceptionally good for pupils of their age and experience. An understanding of processes was apparent from answers to a series of questions. Miss McCallum appears to have succeeded in maintaining good standards and arousing an interest in homemaking activities suited to girls of this grade.

Delaware Central School
School librarian retiring this month
Mrs Laura Hutton, librarian at Delaware Central School, will be retiring later this month to enjoy the other things in life. Mrs. Hutton, who has spent over twenty years working in schools is eagerly looking forward to travelling among other things. For the past eleven years she ahs been at Delaware Central working a librarian and in the past as an English teacher. The library has been operating on a 70 per cent basis this year with Mrs Hutton on duty Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Books did not occupy all of her time at school. Just last week she was trying to sort through the accumulated records from a district track meet. Mrs. Hutton was able to smile when she thought back when a sudden heavy rain soaked the cardboard score sheets causing the ink to smear almost beyond recognizable form.
Mrs Hutton's working career in schools began with an eleven year stint. She then took a break and got married only to return to the school life some time later.
Her husband, John, office manager at Westminister, is retiring this year and they have immediate plans to head off to Texas for a service club convention. Mr Hutton is a past Lieutenant Governor with the Optimist Club.
They have crossed the continent several times and Mrs Hutton is looking forward to having the time to see even more places in North America. She said motoring is the only way to travel as it gives you a chance to see the countryside.
When not travelling , Mrs Hutton said she has a million things in mind she wants to try. Among them is writing and possibly getting involved in real estate.
She will be the guest of honor at a retirement tea to be held at the school on Monday, June 20th from 2:30 to 5:30.
