Children Assist Optimists with Byron Community Hall
The kids were really raising the roof out Byron way Saturday and everyone in town loved it.
The roof they were raising-or helping to-will go on the Byron Optimist Club's community centre. Saturday, hundreds of children staged a huge parade through Byron streets to the club's annual "community day"fair, and with a Pied Piper switch lured hundreds of parents along behind to spend money and help boost the club's project.
The centre will be completed by the first of the year if plans go ahead on schedule. Sod was turned last week by Optimist President Robert Vincent and the entire proceeds from the fair will help to pay for the structure.
John Hutton and Dave Thomas were co- chairmen of the community day affair and won high praises from their fellow.
The goal of community day, the community centre, will serve the Optimists and the entire village. The building will include an auditorium 50 by70 feet that can be used as a gymnasium for basketball, floor hockey, badminton and organized games. A kitchen and meeting rooms and a workshop for boys that can double as a recreation room for children, including Boy Scouts, make up the rest of the interior. Outside, the grounds will be developed with an area for lawn bowling on one side and tennis courts on the other. Other features planned for are a swimming pool and play area.
