Brick structure was built in 1893 as a blacksmith shop for W.J. Lawrence, who ran it as such for almost fifty years.

Egremont Native William Lawrence dies at Durham
A highly esteemed resident of Durham for the greater part of his life, William James Lawrence died at his home here on Saturday. He was in his 78th year and has been in ell health for the past five years and bedfast for the past two years. The late Mr. Lawrence was born in the Wilders Lake district of Egremont twp. and was a son of the late John Lawrence and Sarah Eva. He was a blcacksmith by trade and had conducted his own business since 1897 until his retirement due to ill health about five years ago. He was married nearly 53 years ago to Margaret Catherine Clarke of Bentinck twp. who survives to mourn his loss. Also left to mourn are four daughter; Mrs. Florence Davis of Owen Sound; Mrs. Jemima Shippam, Margaret, Mrs. Charles Graham and Miss Helen Lawrence all of Durham. Mr. Lawrence was one of a family of 14 children, of whom four brothers and two sister survive. They are Arthur of Egremont twp.; George of Sarnia; Thomas of Toronto; Albert of Carmen, Man.; Mrs. Minnie Harrison of Detroit, and Mrs. John Acheson of New Westminster, BC. The late Mr. Lawrence was a member of the former Methodist church in Durham and recently while health permitted , attended the Anglican church.

Doris Henderson; passed away at the Durham Memorial Hospital on Thursday, January 15, 1987. Doris Rose Lawrence in her 71st year. Beloved wife of Archie Henderson, dear mother of Eleanor, Mrs. Norman Marshall of Durham. Also survived by three grandchildren, Nancy, Susan and Jeffery. Predeceased by two brothers Dolphie and Eddie and two infant sisters. Resting at the McCulloch Funeral Home, Durham after 7:00 pm Friday where funeral and committal services will be held on Sunday at 2:00 pm. Spring internmet Durham Cemetery.
