Bentinck Youth Drowns at Varney
Leslie Lawrence , 10, son of Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Lawrence, of Con. 2, Bentinck drowned Monday when he and two companions jumped from a diving board into eight feet of water at Varney ;Community Pond and Recreation Centre. With Dennis Jarrat, nine , of Durham, and a cousin, Donald MacArthur, 10, also of Durham, the Lawrence boy was a non-swimmer. It is reported the trio leaped one after the other from the board and young Lawrence sank to the bottom. His cousin, the strongest swimmer of the three, made a vain effort to save him but got into trouble himself and had to be rescued. He is in Durham Hospital suffering shock and inhalation of water. Cameron Kerr, who lives near the pond, was attracted by confusion and managed to recover the body after about 15 minutes of diving.
