Obituary Durham Chronicle January 1935
January 30 - Death came to Mr. Charles G. Lawrence (George) on Monday evening, after a weeks illness in Durham Hospital. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Lawrence, and was born in Glenelg Township May 1859. He was one of the first pupils in the first school opened there in 1862, and at the reunion there in 1930, no one was happier than Mr. Lawrence , meeting his old teacher and former school companions. His first marriage was to Miss Charlotte Hutton and they began homemaking in Bentinck Township. To them were born four sons George, John, Edward , now residing in Paradise Valley, Alberta and William at Grand View, Manitoba. Thirty eight years ago, and sometime after the death of Charlotte Lawrence he remarried to Miss Lydia Noble.. To them were born seven children, Hattie and Herbert passing on in childhood. Two brothers and three children remain, Howard and Thomas in Bentinck: Sybil, Mrs. Percy Ledingham in Bentinck. Sadie, Mrs. James McGirr in Detroit, Mrytle with her mother in Durham. There are also twelve grandchildren. Four years ago Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence gave up farming, their son Howard taking up the duties on the home farm. They moved into town, to their newly built home on Albert St. For many years he had served as Secretary Treasurer of Hutton Hill School. Mr. Lawrence was of a friendly disposition, and since coming to town had leisure to enjoy the companionship of his many friends. Two brothers had passed on before him, Thomas Hutton and John, one half brother Mr. Samuel Langrill survives him. The funeral service will be private from his residence on Thursday at 2 p.m.
In Dec. 1933 Charles Lawrence bought the farm lot 52 con. 3 WGR and it went to his son Thomas two years later. Early in 1934 the frame house was destroyed by fire. From the gravel pit on this farm quantities of gravel have been crushed and used on the roadside in Bentinck township and area. In the late 1960's a large field was cleared and much cultivating, the land was seeded as permanent pastures. Following the passing of Thomas Albert in June 1982, his sons Donald and Jack became owners of this property.
This 100 acres lot 53 con 3 WGR was purchased in Dec. 1933 as part of the Grierson estate, along with lots 52 & 54. In Jan. 1935 the son Thomas Lawrence took over the farm. With the help of a hired man and using a team of horses, he undertook to clear away the many pine stumps remianing on the land. This involved a great deal of dynamiting and then burning the huge piles of fragrant pine roots but it resulted in more good cleared land with easier cultivation.
IN 1956 Donald Lawrence bought the west 50 acres of lot 53 from his father along with lot 54.
lot 56 con. 3 WGR was purchased in 1895, this property remained in the Lawrence name until 1962.
