"JAS. H. ENGLISH DEAD. Prominent Citizen of the Town for Many Years.
Jas. H. English, another of the few remaining men who have been indentified with the life of this town since the early days, passed away on Wednesday evening of last week, after an extended illness. Mr. English suffered a severe paralytic stroke about 6 months ago and altho he recuperated sufficiently to get out around town occasionally, he never fully recovered from the effects and gradually grew worse. Deceased was an Irishman who was born in the Emerald Isle 65[?] years ago. Coming with his parents to this country at an early age, he launched into the sawmill business, which he successfully conducted for a number of years. Later he turned his attention to railway contracting, and for sometime supplied the G.T.R. and one Air Line systems with ties for construction work. He took an active part in municipal affairs and acted both in the capacity of mayor and councillor, occupying the former position for two successive terms in the eighties. He was also connected with the board of health and Collegiate Institute board, rendering faithful service on each for many years. In remembrance of his staunch allegiance to the Conservative party, he received the appointment to the position of justice of the peace, when the present Whitney government came into power. About 30 years ago he married Miss Bullock of Otterville, who with one sister survive him. It will be remembered that deceased father was station agent here many years ago. The late Col. John English, clerk of the sixth division court, was a brother. The funeral held on Friday afternoon was largely attended. The brethren of the local Masonic lodge being in attendance in a body and taking part in the obsequies, Rev S.F. Robinson, pastor of the church of his choice, officiating. Among the relatives in attendance from a distance were H.E. Bullock, E. Marshall, and Miss Edith English of Chicago, and Herbert and Miss Laura Marshall of Toronto."
