Biography compiled by (Person ID 2565) Thelma Cannon and transcribed by JAB in June 1992. This file commenced October 3, 1992
JEAN EMMA STAHL was born on 13 October 1911 in Kalgoorlie WA. A few weeks later her mother took the family to Fremantle while her father worked at Gwalia (near Leonora WA.) She commenced school at the White Gum Valley School where her sister
Jess was a teacher, then continued at South Terrace, Fremantle, Kalgoorlie Central School until 6th standard and then Kalgoorlie High School. She was apprenticed in hairdressing with Mr Scheele in Kalgoorlie. When she qualified with a diploma
she started a salon in Boulder and operated until 1932 when she went to Melbourne to join her father.
-----------------
Apparently Charles William Stahl had a business of some sort in Frankston; possibly a cake shop. Jean lived there and kept house for him at one period, but the details are obscure as they are based on my vague memories of conversations 55 years
ago. For some time before he died of cancer on 15 August 1935 she had looked after him at the family home at 201 Bastings St Northcote. He had a Ford V8 car known as "Henry" which Jean drove. After he died it was sold following family pressure.
I remember Jean saying that the family thought it unseemly for a young girl to be driving around in such a powerful car and that she was liable to kill herself. Probably the financial cost of its upkeep was a factor.
In March 1933 (probably Sat.11th following Joy Stahl's 21st birthday on 8 Mar 1933) Jean met Joy Stahl for the first time and sang at the party held in the Essendon High School hall. She sang two songs based on A.A.Milne's "Winnie the Pooh"
stories which has been set to music by one of her musical associates in Western Australia (Kalgoorlie ?) She also sang at the Joy Stahl - Syd Broadway wedding at the Camberwell Methodist Church on 11 April 1936. This information was given to me
by Joy on October 20, 1992.
August 8, 1994 from letter LCF572.R.Cannon
While going through my Stahl folder with Geoff Walker I realized that some old drainage plans of houses built by Charles William Stahl contained some previously undisclosed information. The plans relate to houses in the same general area as the
Stahl family home at 201 Bastings St, Northcote Vic.and are dated Sept 1923 - Sept 1924 and Jan - May 1927. C Stahl is listed as the owner or, in some instances, as agent. The 1923-4 houses were scattered around the area but the 1927 ones are
all in Elms Avenue (now Slater St) which runs along side the old family home at 201 (formerly 261) Bastings St, Northcote.
This has enabled me to make a guess at that part of the family history which was not openly discussed. I know that Jean went back to Kalgoorlie from Fremantle when she was 11 years old. She turned 11 on 13 Oct 1922. I was given to understand
that Charles William Stahl returned to Victoria to safeguard his interest in the family estate. This is confirmed by the drainage plan DP133039, dated 11 Sep 1923, issued to C Stahl, 261 Bastings St, Northcote, owner. The 1924 houses were in
the same general area but were not, as far as I know, part of the family estate. The matriarch of the family, Elizabeth Jane Stephens STAHL, died on 5 June 1925. With one exception all of the 1927 houses were in Elms Ave (renamed Slater St)
which was Stahl land. Jean and I lived in one of them from Sept 1938 until 1962, Alice Maude Mary Stahl died at Kalgoorlie on 1931/10/08 (1931/08/15?) and Jean came to Melbourne where she sang at her cousin, Joy Stahl's 21st birthday in March
1933. At some stage she lived at Frankston Vic. where her father had a shop. Charles William Stahl died at Northcote on 15 Aug 1935.
