Lake Hugh Muntz
The waters adjacent to Barrier Reef Drive, Mermaid Waters, known as Lake Hugh Muntz. This would probably be named after the grandfather of Geoff Muntz a member of parliament in Queensland in the 1980s- I think? Hugh Muntz [green tree] had
only one son who had male heirs- Edward who incidentally was also a civil engineer first in Victoria at Moe where he married, then in Queensland.where he made the railway "tramway" at Mosssman to get the sugar to the ships.

Individual Note: Obituary published in (a Rockhampton?) Qld. newspaper on 20 February 1933:
OBITUARY
LATE MR. E. G. BLACKBURN.
MOSSMAN, February 17.
Word was received last week of the
death in Brisbane of the late Mr. E. G.
Blackburn, which followed an operation.
The late Ernest Guy Blackburn was
a native of Victoria, and came to Moss-
man over 32 years ago and remained in
the district for nearly 27 years. While
in Mossman, Mr. Blackburn occupied the
following positions: Mill storekeeper,
secretary of the co-operative butchers,
and Shire Clerk of the Douglas Shire,
and was for a time licencee of the Court
House Hotel, Port Douglas. Mr. Black-
burn was married in Mossman, and his
family was born there. Leaving Moss-
man in 1920, the Blackburn family went
to Home Hill, where Mr. Blackburn
was for eight years before going to
Brisbane. In sporting and in social mat-
ters, Mr. Blackburn took an active part,
and was of a kindly and a gentlemanly
nature. To the man who was down,
"Blackie" (as he was known) extended
a helping hand, and it mattered not to
him whether the one in trouble was a
friend or foe. "Blackie" will long be re-
membered in the Mossman district, and
the district's sympathy is extended to his
wife and five grown up children, Messrs.
Wattie, Reg, and Allan and Misses Enid
and Masie, in their sad bereavement.
Ernest Guy Blackburn. Good sport and
kind hearted gentleman. Vale

Maurice Blackburn
1880-1944
Speaker: 1933-1934
Legislative Assembly: 1914-1917, 1925-1934
Maurice Blackburn was Speaker for less than one year in 1933-34 and, although he was twice a member of the Legislative Assembly for a total period of about twelve years, it could be argued that the most important part of his work was outside
parliament. He was born at Inglewood, Victoria, and was taken to Melbourne by his mother when his father died in 1887. After finishing school, Blackburn worked as an office boy in a legal firm, and later studied at the University of Melbourne.
He was admitted to the Bar in 1910.
He was involved in the anti-sweating movement, and in about 1908 joined the Labor Party. In 1914 he contested and won the Legislative Assembly seat of Essendon for the Labor Party, but was defeated in the 1917 election due largely to his strong
anti-war and anti-conscription stand. In 1914 he married Doris Amelia Hordern who had been the campaign secretary of Vida Goldstein, the first woman to stand for election to federal parliament, and was herself a leading pacifist.
Blackburn was both prominent and popular in the post-war Labor Party, and in 1925 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Fitzroy. He held the seat until 1927, when he won the new seat of Clifton Hill. During this
period in parliament he was active in opposing the repressive economic measures proposed during the 1930s depression. In 1933, when Labor lost office, he was elected Speaker, but resigned from the Legislative Assembly in 1934 in order to
contest the Federal seat of Bourke.
Although he won Bourke and held it until 1943 his relations with the Labor Party and later the Labor government were chequered. His concern with international socialism and his opposition to conscription frequently caused him to take positions
opposed to Labor policy, and in 1937 he was expelled over his membership of the Movement Against War and Fascism.
He was re-admitted to the Party in 1937, but expelled again for his association with the Australia-Soviet Friendship League. After his second expulsion he did not re-join the Labor party, although the ruling banning the Australia-Soviet
Friendship League was reversed, and in 1943 he lost his seat to the official Labor candidate.
He died at Prahran, and was survived by his wife and three children.

Kalgoorlie is the major city in the eastern goldfields region, and is located 596 km east north east of Perth. It was gazetted a townsite in September 1894. Paddy Hannan, Daniel Shea and Thomas Flanagan made a rich gold find near Mt Charlotte
in June 1893. The find soon led to a gold rush with thousands of diggers prospecting the rich alluvial field. When the government decided to declare a townsite here in 1894, the place was locally known as "Hannan's Find", and at first the name
"Hannans" was nominated for the townsite. In suggesting the name Hannans to the Commissioner of Crown Lands, the Under Secretary for Lands, R Cecil Clifton, noted that the "native name of the place is "Calgoorlie" but this is rather too much
like Coolgardie and if adopted is, I fear likely to lead to postal mistakes". R Cecil Clifton supported "Hannan", but Cabinet chose "Kalgoorlie" in August 1894. Although local preference was for Hannan's Find, Kalgoorlie soon came to be
accepted as the name of the rapidly developing town. An alternative spelling of "Kalgurli" was also used unofficially on occasions. Just when the name Kalgoorlie was first recorded and the precise meaning of the name is unknown. Various sources
give it as either meaning: Aboriginal dog chasing a kangaroo; the Aboriginal name of a shrub from the area ("Galgurli");or the Aboriginal name for the local edible silky pear ("Kulgooluh").

Occupation: Place: Soil Scientist
Individual Note: GERARD ('Dick') BLACKBURN
I joined CSIRO Soils Division in 1946, having previously gained B.Agr.Sc (my only degree) from the University of Melbourne (1934-38), worked 1939-43 for the Victorian Department of Agriculture at its Mallee Research Station, Walpeup, and during
1943-45 for the Commonwealth Department of Labour on industrial hygiene investigations in war industries.
From 1946 to 1960 I made soil surveys, with guidance from G.G.Stephens and J.K.Taylor. This work involved irrigated horticulture, sail erosion, postwar land settlement, metropolitan housing estates, or regional mapping in South Australia and
western Victoria, and a land settlement project in Brunei (Borneo). Most of this involved collaboration with many people in the Division and in State institutions in S.A. and Vict. Results of major projects appeared in the Division's Soils and
Land Use Series.
Research interests, principally involving soil salinity, soil- geomorphic relations, genesis of terra rossa soils, and geochronology. were taken up from the late 1950s and several papers were published by 1970. From 1966, preparations for the
9th ISSS Congress in Adelaide during 1968 were given special attention. Then involvement with experimental pasture sites for the National Soil Fertility Program took priority for a few years. Work on other research projects was minimised; the
major outcome was the geomorphic map of the Riverine Plain (1973), in collaboration with B.E.Butler and four others. From 1971 I concentrated on salinity research but was also involved with soil genesis, including attention to gilgai soils.
By the time of my retirement early in 1983, as a Senior Principal Research Scientist, I had completed - often in collaboration with others - almost a hundred papers, including many short contributions in various Australian journals. I value my
association with many colleagues - not only in Australia - who provided stimulating ideas and technical competence. Among the present staff of the Division these include Malcolm Wright, John Coppi, and Jim Thompson - companions on many field
trips. I believe I was lucky to Join the Division of Soils at a time when it was trying to cope with many aspects of postwar development despite the scarcity of scientists with interests in soils. I also think I was wise to follow advice
received in my first year at Walpeup: 'make notes of what you have done'.
