Individual Note:
Hugh Blackburn, the second son of Walter Hugh Blackburn (1868-1921) and Isabella Spring (1864-1904), was born in Footscray, Victoria on 24 March 1895. He married in Perth W.A. on 31 December 1915 Sybil Alice Maley who was born in Fremantle
W.A., but whose family was originally from South Australia.
Private H. Blackburn was a member of the 11th Battalion 5th Military District Commonwealth Forces during the 1914-1918 War. He saw service in many European theatres of war and was reported killed in action on 16 April 1917. However, six months
later, on 24 October 1917, the Red Cross reported that he was a prisoner of war in Limburg, Germany. He was released at the end of the war and arrived back in Perth in late 1918.
On 4 October 1940 he re-inlisted for duty, and due to injuties received in the First World War was posted to the 10th Australian Garrison Battalion stationed at Karakatta W.A. until discharged on 2 November 1945.
He ran a very successful horse drawn carriage delivery business in Perth, including contracting to The Swan Brewery Co. delivering kegs of beer to the many hotels in Perth, Fremantle and nearby country towns.
He died on 18 August 1947 aged 52 in an ambulance, from what the Coroner said was high blood pressure resulting in a Cerebral Haemorrage, leaving three adult, two teenage and one ten year old child. Sybil Blackburn never remarried.
